About Us

The Dyslexia Teaching Centre was founded in September 1997 by its current Unit Director Michele Pemberton. Initially starting in Church premises in Woolton, the centre expanded into its current base in Allerton Road in January 2000.

Michele’s background in Dyslexia is far reaching. Having qualified as a Middle School Classroom teacher in July 1987 and overseeing many one-to-one tutoring opportunities in the early 1990’s, Michele started her official journey into dyslexia in 1992 with a preliminary Dyslexia course with Sheila Yale in Ormskirk, who provided the first tools needed to deliver multi-sensory based language programmes to children with specific learning differences. In 1993 Michele enrolled on a Post Graduate Diploma in Dyslexia with Dyslexia Action, opening the first Dyslexia Action Teaching Centre for them, based at Liverpool College Independent School, in 1994.

The intention in 1997 was to leave and return to classroom teaching but the demand for assessment and teaching intervention for specific learning differences was great, which led to the establishment of the Dyslexia Teaching Centre. Over the years the Centre has grown from strength to strength and is well known for its assessment of Dyslexia and overlapping developmental difficulties and for interventions which are adaptable to the personal needs of the individual.
